Overview

Sohra, formerly known as Cherrapunji, is one of Meghalaya’s most famous tourist destinations. Located about 55 km from Shillong in the East Khasi Hills, Sohra is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, deep valleys, waterfalls, caves, and living root bridges. It is globally known for receiving some of the highest rainfall on Earth and still holds world records for rainfall in a month and a year.

Day 1 :

Guwahati Arrival – Shillong – Sohra

Arrive at Guwahati Airport /Railway Station, where you will be warmly welcomed by our representative. After a brief meet-and-greet, begin your scenic journey towards Meghalaya.

En route, stop at the beautiful Umiam Lake, popularly known as Barapani, for breathtaking views and photo opportunities. Continue your drive through the picturesque hills of Meghalaya towards Sohra (Cherrapunji).

Visit the stunning Mawkdok Dympep Valley View Point, offering panoramic views of deep valleys and lush green landscapes. Proceed to the majestic Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, followed by an exploration of the fascinating Mawsmai Cave.

By evening, check in to your hotel/resort in Sohra. Relax amidst the serene surroundings, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the adventures ahead.

Day 2 :

Full Day Sohra Sightseeing

After breakfast, embark on a full-day exploration of Sohra, one of Meghalaya's most iconic destinations, renowned for its waterfalls, caves, valleys, and breathtaking landscapes.

Nohkalikai Falls – Witness India's tallest plunge waterfall and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding gorge.
Mawsmai Cave – Explore fascinating limestone formations inside one of Meghalaya's most accessible caves.

Return to your hotel after a memorable day of sightseeing. Enjoy dinner and relax amidst the cool mountain atmosphere of Sohra.

Day 3 :

Sohra – Mawlynnong – Dawki – Shnongpdeng

After an early breakfast, check out from your hotel in Sohra and proceed towards Dawki, one of Meghalaya's most picturesque destinations. En route, visit the charming Mawlynnong, renowned as one of the cleanest villages in Asia. Stroll through its beautifully maintained pathways, experience the warm hospitality of the Khasi community, and enjoy panoramic views of the Bangladesh plains from the village Sky Walk.

Continue to the nearby Riwai Living Root Bridge, a remarkable example of traditional Khasi ingenuity where living tree roots have been carefully guided to form a natural bridge over generations.

After exploring Mawlynnong, proceed to Dawki, famous for the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River. Enjoy a scenic boat ride on the river, offering breathtaking views of the transparent water and surrounding hills. Visit the historic Dawki Suspension Bridge and the India-Bangladesh border, where you can witness cross-border activities and enjoy spectacular views.

Later, drive to the peaceful riverside village of Shnongpdeng, known for its adventure activities and stunning natural beauty. Adventure enthusiasts can opt for activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, cliff jumping, ziplining, or swimming in the clear waters of the Umngot River (subject to availability and weather conditions).

Check in to your campsite, homestay, or riverside resort. Spend the evening relaxing by the river, enjoying a campfire (seasonal) and the tranquil atmosphere of the village.

Day 4 :

Shnongpdeng – Jowai – Shillong

After breakfast, enjoy the peaceful morning by the crystal-clear waters of the Shnongpdeng. Check out from your campsite or resort and begin your journey towards Shillong via the scenic Jaintia Hills region.

How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

Annapurna Base Camp is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will too, you can.

How long do we walk every day when doing Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

On average, you walk about 4 to 6 hours per day. One or two days can be as less as 3hrs and one or two days can be as long as 7hrs.

What is the highest altitude reached in this trek?

The highest altitude reached is 4190m. This is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp. ABC is the highest we will climb in this trek.

What about battery charging and hot shower facilities?

Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay a certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, a hot water facility could be free at a lower elevation.

Are there ATMs on the way to Annapurna Base Camp?

No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.

What about internet access?

Yes. The Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. The Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

Is it necessary to hire Guides/trekking agency for Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during the offseason.

It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.

How much do guides and porters cost?

For the Annapurna region, pay for guides range from $20 to $30 per day and porters take $15 to $25 per day.
